Terms of Use

What this site is
The Bill of Lading publishes general reference material about moving in the United States — how estimates are built, what the documents in an interstate move commit each side to, how liability for loss and damage is chosen and limited, what a move actually costs, and where the federal rules governing all of that are written down.
It is a reference, not a moving service and not a referral service. This site does not arrange, broker, or perform moves. It does not collect quote requests, operate a lead form, sell or share reader details with movers, brokers, or marketing companies, and it takes no commission, referral fee, or payment of any kind from any moving company, van line, container provider, truck rental company, or storage operator. Where a company is named on this site, it is named because it is part of the example, not because of any arrangement with it.
No page here reviews your particular estimate or bill of lading, negotiates with your mover, prepares or files a claim on your behalf, or represents you in any dispute.
No professional advice
Content here is general information, not professional advice.
The author is not a lawyer, a licensed motor carrier or household goods broker, an insurance producer, a claims adjuster, or a certified moving consultant, and nothing on this site is offered as legal, insurance, or transportation advice. Reading this site, or contacting the author, creates no attorney-client or other professional relationship.
Your move is governed by the documents you actually signed — the estimate, the order for service, the bill of lading and its valuation election, and the tariff those documents incorporate — and by the law applying to your particular shipment. A guide on this site cannot override any of them, and where this site and your paperwork disagree, your paperwork is what binds you. For anything with money or a deadline attached, verify against the current regulation and, where the stakes justify it, get advice from someone qualified to look at your specific documents.
Accuracy and currency
Guides are researched against official sources and dated on publication. Even so:
- Federal moving regulations, claim procedures, complaint routes, and agency forms are amended, and a rule that was current when a guide was written may since have changed.
- Rates, surcharges, valuation pricing, deposit practices, and rental and storage costs are set by individual companies and by tariff, vary by season and by route, and are not fixed by any rule cited here.
- Local and intrastate moves are governed by state rules that differ from the federal rules described on this site, and requirements for one state are not evidence of the requirements in another.
- A guide reflects the situation at the date shown on it, not necessarily today.
- Errors happen.
No warranty is given that content is accurate, complete, or current. If you find something wrong, please report it via the contact page — corrections are made promptly.
